Nordic & Scandinavian Design
Zeev Aram was one of the first retailers to encourage the British to embrace European Modernism – and Aram, which he founded in 1964, is still one of the best places in the UK to find both traditional and contemporary design. Among the many treasures at our Covent Garden store – which stocks a mix of furniture, lighting, rugs and accessories over four floors – is an impressive selection of Nordic and Scandinavian design.
In 2019, Aram put the spotlight on these brands with the launch of a Nordic Design Month, an event that brought together 12 of the region's foremost furniture and lighting labels, from heritage names such as Carl Hansen & Søn to younger firms, including Eikund and Sibast Furniture. Many of the pieces are instantly recognisable icons of timeless modern design.

Fritz Hansen started his company in 1872 in Copenhagen, specialising in the manufacture of small furniture parts. Manufacturing processes developed over time with steam bending so refined that in the 1930s the company was among the world leaders in the field. This led to wood lamination for which Fritz Hansen is renowned, the Ant chair of 1952 being a runaway hit as was its successors, the Series 7 and Drop chairs. The designer, Arne Jacobsen, delivered numerous other successful products for the company, in particular the Egg and Swan chairs. Fritz Hansen continues to produce its classic designs while also introducing new pieces to its collection annually.
