Season of Light

Belleville Collection - Outdoor Furniture

Spring time. We all know when it is here. We can see, feel, smell and anticipate the changes. The windows that have remained sealed for the last few months stretch open and the sensations of the season first trickle, then flood in. Our homes reshape, darkened corners are illuminated and the indoor and outdoor light greet each other like old friends.

To celebrate this season of light, we are focusing on three new collections of outdoor furniture from Vitra.

Bouroullec - Belleville Table and Chair

First, Belleville by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. Modelled on the typology of the classic bistro table, as seen in the vibrant Belleville area of Paris where the Bouroullec brothers have their studio, the slender shapes flow in sweeping lines, and the collection is just as much at home inside as out. The tables and chair frames are in a sleek black, whilst a dash of colour is offered by the seat shells.

Vitra White Collection

The White Collection dresses some of Vitra's most popular chairs in new ivory and white finishes. An ivory powder-coated weatherproof base has been added to the white seat shells of the HAL and Tom Vac chairs, and the HAL table - just for this Summer. Also included in the collection is the cream Vegetal chair - an organically-shaped design manufactured using a highly energy-efficient process and made from 100% recyclable polyamide.

Hans Coray - Landi Chair

Developed for the 1939 Swiss National Exhibition (Schweizer Landesausstellung), the Landi Chair occupies an important place in the history of twentieth-century design: this classic by Hans Coray established the new typology of a three-dimensionally moulded seat shell on a separate base. The clear structure of the all-aluminium chair consists of two parts. First, a pair of U-shaped profiles connected by welded crossbeams form a self-supporting frame and simultaneously serve as the legs and low armrests. This base supports a seat shell, which makes ideal use of the material’s possibilities: the 91 punched holes not only ensure the modest weight and flexibility of the comfortable shell, but also give the graceful Landi its trademark appearance. The lightweight, stackable Landi Chair is robust and weather-resistant. Technical innovation, optimal use of materials, minimalist forms and understated elegance are the elements that have made the Landi Chair into a classic over the years, which looks as fresh and vital today as ever.

Michel Charlot - Davy Table

The Davy Table is a robust new design for outdoor use. Its construction is composed of anodised aluminium sheeting and aluminium tubing, making it lightweight while also giving it a high degree of strength and rigidity. The young Swiss designer Michel Charlot developed this table to complement the legendary Landi Chair designed by Hans Coray in the same material. Thus the Davy Table and Landi Chair make a perfect combination, but each can also be attractively paired with other chairs or tables. Despite – or perhaps because of – its technical material properties and raw-looking finish, the weatherproof Davy Table is well suited to a wide variety of outdoor settings, also thanks to its compact proportions. The table has a punched hole in the centre of the top to accommodate a parasol. Up to four tables can be stacked at an angle, and the height of the glides can be adjusted to level the legs on uneven ground.
