London Design Festival - The Art of Looking Sideways
London Design Festival runs from 17th to 24th September 2011.
Aram Store celebrates 10 years of 'The Art of Looking Sideways' by Alan Fletcher, with an exhibition of design work and objects from the late great graphic designer's studio which helped form the thinking behind the book of quotes, pictograms and ironic observations.
Alan Fletcher in his studio
Alan Fletcher (1931 - 2006) was among the most influential figures in British graphic design and visual thinking. As a founding partner of leading design consultancy Pentagram in the 1970s, Fletcher combined commercial partnership with creative independence. He developed some of the most notable visual schemes in the late 20th century, designing identities for the Victoria & Albert Museum, Reuters, Lloyd's of London and book design for Penguin and Phaidon where he was creative director.
A double page spread of The Art of Looking Sideways
After leaving Pentagram in 1992, Alan spent his time in his Notting Hill studio concentrating on personal projects. He also worked one day a week for Phaidon, publishers of 'The Art of Looking Sideways'. The ultimate guide to visual awareness, the book explores the workings of the eye, the hand, the brain and the imagination. Anecdotes, quotations, images, useless information and jokes are loosely arranged in 72 chapters across pages which express the use of type, space, colour, language, pattern, illusions and aesthetics.
During the exhibition we will be selling 'The Art of Looking Sideways' at the special price of £22.50 instead of £29.95
