Akari Lamp Collection

In 1951, Japanese-American artist and designer Isamu Noguchi started to design the Akari Light Sculptures, a total of over 100 hand-made Shoji-paper models for table lights, standard lamps or ceiling luminaires. For the name of this lighting series he chose the word 'akari', the Japanese terms for brightness and light, and also lightness.

The Akari Light Sculptures are hand-crafted in the Ozeki workshop, a family-run business in Gifu - where Noguchi sketched his first light, a town famous for making lanterns - and are made from bamboo rods and washi paper. From compact table lamps like the Akari 1A to larger statement pieces such as the 20N Floor Lamp or the Akari pendants, every design carries Noguchi's signature and his sun-and-moon logo.
