Collection: Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman

The Eames Lounge Chair, designed by husband and wife team Charles and Ray Eames in the 1950s, is widely recognised as one of the greatest classics of Mid-Century Modern furniture design. As the sole authorised manufacturer for Europe and the Middle East, Vitra has produced the chair using virtually the same methods ever since the collaboration between the eminent brand and the design duo began in 1957, and the close partnership with the Eames Office continues to this day. This ensures that every Lounge Chair gives its user the exact design experience originally intended by Charles and Ray Eames.

Available in a choice of six wood veneers for the shell, polished aluminium or aluminium and black for the base and frame, and a wide choice of leather or fabric upholstery options.

Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman

A Timeless Classic

The design process - which took several years - was kicked off by Charles asking his wife 'Why don't we make an updated version of the old English club chair?' They sought a combination of ample proportions, ultimate comfort and the highest quality materials and craftsmanship, with the 'warm receptive look of a well-used baseball glove' according to Eames Demetrios, the couple's grandson.

The veneer shell of the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman is available in a choice of six wood finishes: santos palisander, cherry, natural chestnut, black lacquered chestnut, natural walnut and dark walnut. These have been paired with Premium F leather, Natural F leather, Nubia fabric and Calma velvet. Just as it did sixty years ago, production of the Lounge Chair today requires forty-seven different steps, many of which must be performed by hand. The meticulous execution of each step, in combination with premium-grade materials, ensures the enduring quality that makes the Lounge Chair last for generations.

Since its inception, the average person's height has increased by nearly 10cm and therefore the iconic Eames Lounge Chair is now available in slightly larger dimensions as well as the classic size: the seat is 4cm deeper and the back section is 4cm taller, making the large chair 5cm taller than the classic overall. We have both sizes on display in store for you to try.
