Otto Blumel

Born in Augsburg, Otto Blümel initially trained as an architect at the Technical University of Munich before turning to painting. Between 1907 and 1914, he served as head of the design department at the United Workshops for Art in Craftsmanship in Munich, an influential institution in the development of modern interior design and decoration. The workshops emphasized skilled craftsmanship, the transformation of everyday living spaces, and the clear expression of function. During this time, Blümel created a number of furniture designs that remain highly regarded, including his best-known work, the Nymphenburg coat rack from 1908.
