Bascule Highback & Ottoman

The Bascule Highback Chair and Ottoman, designed by Studio OE for Vitra, combines relaxed comfort with innovative movement. Inspired by the French word for “seesaw”, the Bascule chair features a concealed tilt mechanism with automatic weight adjustment, responding intuitively to changes in body weight. With no levers or fixed positions, the chair moves smoothly from an upright seating position to a deeply reclined, almost horizontal angle, supporting the body with minimal resistance. Its generously tailored fabric cover wraps around the chair like a jacket, drawing on fashion-inspired techniques to accommodate the extensive reclining movement. The removable cover is available in a wide range of colours and can be replaced, cleaned or exchanged to extend the chair’s lifespan. Bascule includes an integrated, height-adjustable neck cushion for enhanced support. Paired with the matching Bascule Ottoman, it creates an exceptionally comfortable lounge solution.
