Isokon Plus

Isokon was founded in 1931 by Jack Pritchard, a visionary leader at the heart of British Modernism, alongside Canadian Architect Wells Coates. Their vision was to design and construct modernist housing and flats and their furniture and fittings. It began with the Lawn Road flats in Hampstead (now named the Isokon Building), the first modern building of its kind, which needed the furniture and fittings Pritchard had envisaged.

Isokon became Isokon Plus in 1997 when then-owner, Chris McCourt began working with new designers Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby. Today Isokon Plus continues to forge long-lasting partnerships with designers who understand and respect the ideals of the original founders. The entire collection is still handmade in London using the finest materials. The occasional table was the only item designed by Gropius to reach production - with twelve copies made. Of the twelve, three were sold and the rest were bombed during WWII. For years, Jack Pritchard was unsuccessful in his attempts to trace the three surviving tables, until he discovered one still in the possession of the original buyer. In 1985, this single table was gifted to the Isokon Archive. Whilst the original drawings were never found, Isokon Plus and VG&P visited the Sainsbury’s Centre to take measurements directly from the original design which was made from birch plywood with a Rexine top: a material little used today with its production ceasing in 2005. Reissued in 2022 to coincide with the launch of Phaidon's publication, Walter Gropius: An Illustrated Biography, today it is made from birch plywood with a black linoleum top.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0928/9927/9174/files/823337_1_Isokon-Occasional-Table-Black-Linoleum-Top-Birch-Legs_82c535f0-887b-4caf-9867-9b24ca36abad.jpg?v=1773151310
isokon-penguin-donkey-bookstand-birch
Isokon Penguin Donkey Bookstand | Birch
Isokon Penguin Donkey Bookstand by Egon Riss for Isokon Plus.
