In designing the Pedestal Collection - which over time has now become known as the Tulip Collection - Eero Saarinen sought to address the "ugly, confusing, unrestful world resulting from the slum of legs underneath typical chairs and tables". He sent letters to Hans Knoll in November 1954 committing to the development of a new series for production, saying "I have been working evenings and have a whole wall full of sketches!" In June 1955, concerned that Saarinen's enormous workload would delay the development, Hans assigned Don Petitt from Knoll's staff to work exclusively on the series. The two men got on so well that Petitt worked with Saarinen until March 1957, when the collection was unveiled at a preview in Knoll's New York showroom to selected architects and invited press. A total of seven patents for the tables and chairs were granted between 1958 and 1961 and the collection has evolved into a symbol of award-winning mid-century modern design and a mainstay of the Knoll design legacy.
In time for the London Design Festival 1012, we are offering a 20% discount on this iconic collection. The offer is applicable to any new order of a dining table plus at least four chairs - 20% discount will be applied to the whole order and it can be for any combination of dining tables and chairs from the Saarinen Tulip collection - for example: an oval table plus four side chairs or a round table plus two side chairs and two arm chairs.
Colour choices include white, black or platinum for the frames; a variety of marbles, wood veneers or white laminate for table tops; an extensive range of fabrics and leathers for seat upholstery - please contact the Store to see the entire range. Chairs and tables feature a heavy, molded cast aluminum base with a strap polished finish. Black and white chairs and tables are rilsan coated. The platinum finish consists of a high-resilient polyurethane enamel wet coat with a clear satin finish and the seat shell is molded fibreglass with a reinforced, plastic bonded finish.
