About this designer: Hans Wegner
Hans Wegner
The work of Hans Wegner (1914-2007) is representative of the combination of excellent craftsmanship and commitment to modern living that made mid-century Danish design internationally popular. Born in Tonder, he got an early start working as a child apprentice to a carpenter. He worked as an assistant to Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller until 1943, helping on their design for the Århus Town Hall, and adding some of his own furniture. In 1943 he opened his own office and came out with the "Chinese" chair which, along with his 1949 "Round" chair would provide the basis for many of his later chairs. Wegner’s chair designs are world renowned, his CH24 Wishbone chair and CH25 chairs are beautiful examples of Danish design. Aram Store is proud to stock many of Wegner’s designs for Carl Hansen & Son.
About this brand: Carl Hansen & Son
Carl Hansen & Son
The founder and first-generation owner, Carl Hansen, was a master cabinetmaker who made furniture to order as well as in small series. He opened his first workshop in Odense, Denmark in 1908. The cooperation between Carl Hansen & Son and Hans J. Wegner began in 1949. Wegner, who trained as a master cabinetmaker before he became a designer, worked closely with Holger Hansen and his team of craftsmen to find a way to bring Wegner’s daring designs into series production. The first models, including the legendary CH_24, “The Wishbone Chair”, were introduced in 1950. Since then Carl Hansen & Son have crafted a wide range of other Wegner chairs and tables. Many of these have achieved status of as collectors’ items and design icons in their own right. Today, Carl Hansen & Son is led by Knud Erik Hansen, grandson of the founder. The third-generation company now produces these enduring designs in a new facility according to the strictest quality and environmental standards.
