About this designer: Poul Kjaerholm
Poul Kjaerholm
Poul Kjaerholm (1929-1980) designed modern functionalist furniture that was praised for its understated elegance and clean lines. He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen where he would later teach, from 1952-56. He went on to become a lecturer and professor in the furniture and interior design department at the Academy of Art from 1957-76. Although he was formally trained as a cabinetmaker, Kjaerholm was a strong proponent for industrial production and his work stands out among that of his Danish contemporaries because of his extensive use of steel frames rather than the traditional wood. He did, however, design many of his seats in natural materials like cane, canvas, leather and rope. Kjaerholm’s designs for Fritz Hansen include the PK22 easy chairs, the PK61 coffee table and the PK80 daybed, all of which are stocked by Aram Store.
About this brand: Carl Hansen & Son
Carl Hansen & Son
The founder and first-generation owner, Carl Hansen, was a master cabinetmaker who made furniture to order as well as in small series. He opened his first workshop in Odense, Denmark in 1908. The cooperation between Carl Hansen & Son and Hans J. Wegner began in 1949. Wegner, who trained as a master cabinetmaker before he became a designer, worked closely with Holger Hansen and his team of craftsmen to find a way to bring Wegner’s daring designs into series production. The first models, including the legendary CH_24, “The Wishbone Chair”, were introduced in 1950. Since then Carl Hansen & Son have crafted a wide range of other Wegner chairs and tables. Many of these have achieved status of as collectors’ items and design icons in their own right. Today, Carl Hansen & Son is led by Knud Erik Hansen, grandson of the founder. The third-generation company now produces these enduring designs in a new facility according to the strictest quality and environmental standards.

Description

The PK1 dining chair, designed by Poul Kjærholm in 1955, is an early example of Kjærholm's unique ability to combine steel with organic materials. The design has an understated look which requires skilled craftsmanship and an in-depth understanding of the inherent nature of the materials. Kjærholm's PK1 chair comprises a steel frame and a combined flag halyard or wicker seat and backrest, which ensures a high degree of comfort and visual lightness that will look at home in both modern and classic interiors. Up to five chairs stackable; outdoor version with a stainless steel frame and weather-resistant flag halyard.
