About this designer: Verner Panton
Verner Panton
Known as the experimental and uncompromising bad boy of post-war Danish design, Verner Panton pushed the design envelope as far as he could. He used steel wire frames and moulded plastic like no designer before him. Born in 1926 and raised on the small Danish island of Funen, Panton attended Odense Technical College and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. As a young man he worked in the design offices of his famed countryman, Arne Jacobsen. Panton is probably most well known for the moulded plastic stacking chair (with a profile strongly related to Rietveld’s 1932 wooden 'Zig-Zag' chair) which bears his name. Aram Store stocks many of Panton’s designs for Vitra including his Panton, Cone and Heart Cone chairs.

Verner Panton spent many years thinking about how to produce a plastic chair moulded in one piece. Together with Vitra, he came up with the first prototypes in 1959-1960 and Panton Chair went into series production as of 1967. Unlike the cheaper Panton Chair Standard in solid plastic, the Panton Chair Classic is made of rigid expanded plastic and has a lacquered surface. .
