Lucian R Ercolani
Lucian R Ercolani, or 'The Old Man' as he is affectionately know in his company, founded ercol in 1920. Born in Italy in 1888, Lucian’s family moved to London in the 1890s. There he went to night school at the Shoreditch Technical Institute where he studied drawing, design and the theory and construction of furniture. In 1907 he made his first piece of furniture – a musical cabinet, inlaid with mother of pearl. Years later the company tracked this down and they still have it to this day. Between 1910 to 1920, The Old Man worked in the design teams for what would later become Parker Knoll and G-Plan, before founding ercol in 1920. He designed the company’s products for many years - a few years ago ercol reintroduced some of Lucian’s classic designs, which now form the ercol Originals.
About this brand: Ercol Furniture Ltd
Ercol Furniture Ltd
In 1920 a young designer called Lucian Ercolani started his own business in High Wycombe, the chairmaking capital of England. There he perfected the technique of steam-bending wood in large quantities to form the famous Windsor Bow, and discovered how to 'tame' elm; a beautifully grained hardwood other furniture makers considered impossible to work with. Design and people were the cornerstones of his company. This remains true of the family owned private company that continues his beliefs in the 21st century. The passion for innovation in design and manufacturing is as strong today as it was then: the Ercol factory combines the very latest technology with time-honoured craftsmanship to create a range of unique pieces.
