Design Icons Month - Eames Lounge Chair
Throughout March, Aram Store celebrates the enduring appeal of authentic design icons. Founded by Willi and Erika Fehlbaum, Vitra acquired the licence to produce furniture from the Herman Miller Collection in Europe in 1957. Thus began the production of furniture from design greats such as Charles & Ray Eames and George Nelson at Basel and Weil am Rhein, crossing two countries – Germany and Switzerland. In 1977 Rolf Fehlbaum (son of Willi and Erika) took over management of the company and production of furniture, lighting and accessories for the domestic market was introduced over time – clocks from Nelson, graphic products from Alexander Girard, lighting from Isamu Noguchi and furniture from Verner Panton, Ronan and Erwan Bououllec and Barber & Osgerby to name a few.
Following a fire on the production site in Weil am Rhein in 1981, Fehlbaum commissioned Nicholas Grimshaw to design new factory facilities. Then followed buildings by some of the world’s most prolific architects including Frank Gehry (Vitra Design Museum and Factory Building), Tadao Ando (Conference Pavilion), Herzog & de Meuron (VitraHaus) and Zaha Hadid (Fire Station - her first built architectural work). The Vitra Campus became a sought out destination, a working site where research and production takes place and many of the buildings are open to visits from the public. In June 2016 the Vitra Schaudepot opened – a fantastic new exhibition space showing 7,000 pieces of furniture and 20,000 objects from Vitra’s extensive design collection which has been collected over many years.
The Lounge Chair is one of the most famous designs by Charles and Ray Eames. Created in 1956 it is now a classic in the history of modern furniture. Since 1956, the Eames Lounge Chair has combined ultimate comfort with both materials and workmanship of the highest quality. In the tradition of the English club chair, which inspired this classic design, the original appearance of the Lounge Chair was defined by a dark wood veneer and black leather.
